Rainbows

As anyone living in Singapore will know the weather patterns do not vary that greatly through the course of the year.  There is a wetter and a drier season as the different monsoons roll in, but largely the weather is pretty consistent.  That said though Singapore does experience some pretty fantastic storms and even now I enjoy watching them just as much as when I first arrived.

One thing that has struck me recently though is how rarely I seem to see rainbows in Singapore, even with there being the regular rain showers and storms.  Perhaps I'm just not looking in the right places at the right times but I've only seen a handful in the time I've been here.  Whether or not this really is the case or I'm just imagining it, here are a couple of the photos I have taken.  They really are beautiful wherever you see them.

  1. Such beautiful pictures. I love the weather here - it fascinates me and I think the storms are brilliant - though best viewed from indoors!

    1. They are stunning but yes much better when you are inside and don't need to be out in them! ;-)

  2. I take our rainy days over sunny ones. Love sleeping when it thunders and the rain comes crashing down outside.

    1. I really do enjoy the cooler, wet days too, I find them such a welcome relief from the intensity of the heat.

    2. just yesterday I got such a headache from the glare of the sun. I am sure there are people who live in cloudy conditions all the time who would trade places with me in a heartbeat, but I just wouldn't be able to survive in Singapore without the air-conditioning. Right now I am suffering with the air-conditioner down....sob! It's such a stuffy night.

    3. When I'm back in the UK I find the dull, grey days which we get in the winter months really make the winter drag and love it when we get bright, sunny days even if it is still cold. I never have that problem in Singapore but even when it is hot and humid in the UK it is never as intense as what it is in Singapore and I guess that makes a big difference!

  3. I found the technical answer to your musings...

rainbows are rare indeed in Singapore... it has to do with the angle of lighting...

You can only find the correct angle to create a prism effect at some quick time during the day... a few minutes in the morning and about the same in the evening.

As the sun rises and sets quickly so close to the equator, the conditions for a rainbow are less frequently reunited than in further up north where the sun sets slowly and we have the correct angle of lighting to make it happen for a longer time

    1. Thank you so much for taking the time to do this, both these photos were taken late afternoon/early evening so that makes perfect sense with what you have found out.

I'm touched that you did and glad to know there is a reason why I seem to see so few.
